- Clever Culture completed three APAS Independence sales in Q1 FY27, including to existing big pharma customers
- A new top 20 global pharmaceutical company is expected to start a paid evaluation in the current quarter
- New sales partnership expands access to pharmaceutical manufacturing markets in US, Canada and Singapore
Special Report: Clever Culture Systems continues to gain traction through a ‘land and expand’ strategy for its flagship automated microbiology platform APAS Independence.
As a result, the company is looking to close out H1 FY27 with a step-change in sales.
In its Q1 FY27 results, Clever Culture Systems (ASX:CC5) reported it had completed and fully invoiced three sales of APAS Independence in the period with existing big pharma customers Novo Nordisk and AstraZeneca.
CCS said it expected to finalise a contract with a new top 20 global pharmaceutical company to start a paid evaluation of APAS Independence in Q2 FY27.
The company is also in final procurement discussions with two existing global pharmaceutical customers as they complete evaluations of APAS Independence.
CCS said these expected sales had the potential to establish an important milestone to create further opportunities for additional sales across two global networks.
Purchase orders are expected during Q2 FY27 and these are also expected to be invoiced in the quarter.
The company is also in the final stage of finalising a purchase commitment from a new single-site pharmaceutical manufacturer, with installation and qualification planned before the end of 2026.
CCS said the sales opportunity originated at the APAS discovery day, held at AstraZeneca’s centre of excellence facility at Macclesfield in the UK in June 2026.
The opportunity has since progressed through the sales process, demonstrating the value of customer-led demonstrations in advancing commercial opportunities.
Establishing APAS Independence as ‘gold standard’
CCS’s flagship APAS Independence is the only AI technology for automated culture plate reading cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
It is being sold to pharmaceutical manufacturing companies for reading environmental monitoring culture plates.
The company said the strong commercial developments during Q1 FY26 reflected continued progress towards establishing APAS Independence as the ‘gold standard’ within leading global pharmaceutical manufacturers.
CCS’s big pharma customers include Novo Nordisk, AstraZeneca, Bristol Myers Squibb, Pfizer, CSL and Thermo Fisher’s contract drug manufacturing organisation.
Initial instrument deployments and paid evaluations provide a foundation for customer validation and potential broader adoption across multiple manufacturing sites, supporting CCS’s long-term ‘land and expand’ commercial strategy.
AstraZeneca and CSL customer insights webinars
During the quarter CCS held customer insight webinars featuring CSL global head of quality control operations Craig Stephens and AstraZeneca’s global head of microbiology, science, technology Karen Capper.
The company said these webinars strengthened market understanding and credibility of its sales strategy with presenters speaking about their experience with the APAS Independence technology and their vision of deployment throughout their companies.
Key topics included the importance of patient safety, risks of human error and data integrity issues in manual environmental monitoring processes, the device’s potential to deliver a fast payback, and a strategy of completing validation centrally before scaling the technology across global sites.
The discussions also highlighted growing industry adoption of APAS Independence.
Expanding reach across Singapore and North America
Post quarter CCS announced it was expanding its reach across North America and Singapore through a new sales partnership with life sciences services company PSC Biotech.
PSC Biotech will identify and develop sales opportunities for APAS across regional, medium and large pharmaceutical manufacturing markets in the US, Canada and Singapore.
The organisation has more than 500 employees globally and serves more than 1000 customers, providing validation, engineering and regulatory consulting services to the pharmaceutical industry.
PSC Biotech will refer qualified opportunities to CCS, which will retain responsibility for closing sales, setting instrument prices and generating recurring software and service revenue.
As part of the deal PSC Biotech has committed to purchasing one APAS Independence instrument for installation at BioTechnique, its wholly owned contract drug manufacturing organisation in York, Pennsylvania.
Building a scalable business
CCS CEO and managing director Brent Barnes said the continued commercial momentum and PSC Biotech partnership underpinned both its FY27 objectives and longer-term growth ambitions.
“While the timing of sales conversion will vary from quarter to quarter, our focus remains on converting evaluations into purchases and supporting broader deployment across customers’ manufacturing networks,” he said.
“This is how we are building a scalable business, growing our global installed base and expanding high-margin, recurring software revenue.”
